Tungnath is the one Kedar among Panch Kedar. Panch Kedar is known as five body parts of Lord Shiva. Here at tungnath the Shiva Linga of the lord is hand pattern. It’s assumed that hands of the Lord Shiva appeared at this place.
The place is very calm and serene.
It’s a historical place that one can visit with a moderate track.

A challenging trek up from Chopta village to this amazing location. The walk on to Chandrasilla Peak is not to be missed. Weather was cloudy when we went but the views are said to be amazing.

January 15, 2019

Very tiring track but once you reach there you feel awesome. Best place for campaign, cold wind waves makes it more awesome. You can easily see a sudden change in weather from sunlight to fog. It took us like 2-2:30 hour to reach there from chopta. And 45 mins to reach Chandra Shila peak from here. At chandrashila, you can see the Himalayan range of mountain sunrise and sunset is the reason why this place is famous for.

An ancient temple built at an altitude of 12,073 ft 5000 years ago is the world’s highest Siva temple. Accessibility only through a 4 km long tiresome but awesome trekking path, surrounded by rhododendrons and the Himalayan peaks

You need to visit this place if you’re in Uttarakhand and wish to do some trekking.
When I visited this place, the snow cover was decent and it was a fun experience to walk through the snow.
The temple was closed, but even then just the feeling of being over there is absolutely worth the climb. You get a stunning view from the top.
Chadrashila is a 1hr trek from Tungnath Temple.
I’d suggest you carry a good pair of trekking shoes as it gets quite slippery when the ice starts to melt.
I’ve uploaded a few images of my visit.

Located at a height of 14000 feet – One needs to Trek for almost 05km, Awesome view of Mountains, Valleys and Himalayan range throughout the trek, you will forget all the tiredness. Once reaching the cave of the temple and we have done a proper pooja for almost 10-15 minutes. First time saw such respect in any temple to the visitors. A priest will give you proper time and complete respect. Beauty and Faith beyond imagination

Tungnath Temple is a spiritual, scenic and significant landmark. The 4-5 kilometre steep path to the temple is a must for all nature enthusiasts and Lord Shiva deities. In winters, the trek is mostly covered in snow so you will have to be careful. It offers majestic views of Nanda Devi Peak, Chorabari Glacier and Chandrashila Peak. The sunrise/sunset is a view you do not want to miss. The trek to Chandrashila is a special experience altogether.

January 5, 2019

We explore this majestic temple during our trek from Derai Taal to Chopta to Tungnath . when we were walking to tungnath it was almost around 3 feet snow and it was fresh snow. it was an awesome experience. it is worth to explore such a holy pace even when snowing. people go beyond Tungnath and go till Chandrashila and comeback to Chopta.

January 5, 2019

2 – 2.5-hour trek depending on your speed, amazing views on the way. The weather changes almost every 20-minute interval ( at least it changed when we were trekking ) – from windy/cold to small hail showers to clear blue sky. The view at the temple is mesmerizing – add to the tag of the ‘Highest Shiva Temple in the world”. My 17-year-old child did the trek with me, so it is doable and fun.

January 4, 2019

Beginner to moderate…it does get you breathless from the start, owing to steepness, but it very very pretty throughout. We went further ahead after Tungnath temple to Chandrashila. Which was steeper and not paved like the earlier trail. But it was even more beautiful. Not just the path but the top. Brilliant unforgettable views. Must do!!! We went in December and we required jackets over sweaters plus caps because it was very windy and cold up there. Moderate/average level of fitness is required.

January 4, 2019

This is the highest Lord Shiva Temple, situated at 14000 meters. above sea level and is also known as fourth Kedar. The climb is steep and tiring although only 3.5 km… but the satisfaction you get after taking darshan is very mesmerizing… You can take the horse also for reaching the temple…

January 2, 2019

As an alone traveller, I got Poni (Horse) service (1500 Rs both ways) for tungnath temple. Journey time was 1.5 hours up and 1 hrs down. This is one of the highest Shiva Temple, situated at 4400 feet. above sea level and it is one of Panch Kedar.

January 1, 2019

Nearly 4 km hard track with panoramic views of Himalayan range with green meadows all around Rocks and plants change with altitude Almost 360 view On top the temple with the architectural beauty of our old heritage given peace and strength

January 1, 2019

I did this trek in 2018 while returning back from Kedarnath. We stayed in Ukhimath and hired a jeep to visit the temple. It’s around 4 km beautiful trek, we thoroughly enjoyed the trek while going up and coming back.
Tungnath is the highest Shiva temple in the world and is the highest of the five Panch Kedar temples located in the mountain range of Tunganath in Rudraprayag district
I would say its a must-visit temple once in your lifetime to enjoy the beauty of nature and get Lord Shiva’s blessings.

December 30, 2018

Tunganath is one of the Panch Kedar (5 ke dar) in pilgrimage. Its approx 12000 ft from sea level. Pony or mule is available for visitors to a temple. Its approx 5km to from base and it will take around 3 to 4hrs to reach if travelling by foot. Awesome site scene with natural beauty. Best view during April May or Sept-Oct Nov. Highly recommended. Pujaris r good and not greedy. Have a queue and puja without any problem.

December 29, 2018

Best trekking experience in my life tungnath and chandrshila best for new trekker best Himalayan trek.

December 28, 2018

I was heard a lot about the beauty of Tungnath and Chopta but realised only after reaching there. The 5 km trek to temple is moderate but Lush green landscapes and meadows all around the trek will make you feel heaven. Calm and clear and beautiful sights will force you to stay there and visit again and again.

December 27, 2018

This place is divine in every mean. World’s highest Lord Shiva temple, beautiful and scenic trek from Chopta to Tungnath. A nice view of Himalayas (snow-capped mountains).
Start early to reach before 09 at Tungnath as its the ideal time to enjoy the beauty around. Best view of Chopta & nearby mountains. Need to be little fit to trek this valley as its steep and little tough. Thanks to Aahvan for such an amazing trek.

Loved the positivity and the view from the temple. Tungnath is 4.5 km trek from Chopta. first 1 km is normal walking road and next 3.5 km is a snow-covered path. Must do a trek of Uttarakhand. Advise, carry metal shoe spikes and a stick for support. It’s very risky and painful to trek without metal spikes. View of Kedarnath dome, Chaukhamba and Mandini pick is breathtaking. especially with its turns golden during sunset.

Tungnath is one of the highest Shiva temples in the world and is the highest of the five Panch Kedar temples located in the mountain range of Tunganath in Rudraprayag district, in the Indian state of Uttarakhand.

The Tunganath (literal meaning: Lord of the peaks) mountains form the Mandakini and Alaknanda river valleys. It is located at an altitude of 3,680 m (12,073 ft), and just below the peak of Chandrashila. The temple is believed to be 5000 years old and is the third (Tritiya Kedar) in the pecking order of the Panch Kedar. It has a rich legend linked to the Pandavas, heroes of the Mahabharata epic.

The trek is about 3kms one side which has a proper path to it but since I went in March, the whole trek was covered with Snow. If you are looking to cover this trek in snow season, get good trekking shoes which are waterproof plus do take a stick for maintaining balance because at many instances you will have to walk by cliff areas.

December 17, 2018

The trip was an out of world experience…more so as there was snow on tungnath trek…we did it with our grp of 9 people. All were so cooperative and enthusiastic. Feels like never wanna come to bk…mentally am still there.

December 15, 2018

It’s an out of the world experience, the abode to Shaivism,

The breathtaking views make you awestruck, This surely was our greatest experience which leads to Chandrashila hills. Will recommend everyone to witness this Beauty in the Himalayas

This holy temple must be visited by everyone. One of the temples among Panch Kedar & I have been there 3 times. You find mental peace, nice villagers & most importantly the silent noise of Nature.

December 10, 2018

Shri Tungnath temple is the highest Shiva’s temple in India. It is around 1000 meter above from Shri Kedarnath Temple. The view from the top is awesome. We reached around sunset and it was super at that time. We can also see the Kedar ghat from the top. View from the top is super excellent.
